A Higher Power is simply a power greater than ourselves that is positive.  In the beginning, when I first came back to the program, my Higher Power was the meetings and the people.  To me, it was like a had a company that was going down the drain.  I pulled together all my best managers and asked them to come up with solutions to help save the company and build a positive profit.  They all share what they have learned, and discovered with me and I take what I need and leave the rest.  I intermix some of their solutions to adapt to make a positive solution to my problem.  That is a Higher Power, a Power Greater than myself.  The ability to be able to quickly come up with solutions to problems I would not otherwise see immediately, or ever.

When I was rehab, I made a "FOR SALE" sign, like an add being taken out in the paper.  "FOR SALE:  One Higher Power full of anger, condemning, cruel, inconsiderate and unloving."  Then, I wrote an ad for "WANTED:  One Higher Power, kind, considerate, loving, forgiving, and dedicated."  I assumed the second Higher Power as my Higher Power.  My new sponsor had a Higher Power, or God, like that.  I borrowed hers for awhile.  Her God even listened to cool music:  Contemporary just like I listened to then.  Eventually, I was sincere in my journey and I ended up exactly where I was supposed to be.  The God, or Higher Power, in my Wanted Sign became the God of my beliefs today.  Maybe you should try this homework.

I wonder how long we must live with the "God" of our childhood, and the God of someone else's Sunday School interpretations.  We don't have to Stay stuck on God being some BIG BAD RULER on a throne in heaven, zapping all sinners for all wrongs they do, and being mad at everybody because they aren't following the rules.  We can learn to know God ourselves, as a spiritual Being, and someone who knows and loves us more than anything!  God values us, has a plan for us, and knows us to be completely unique from each other.

Before you go any farther, let me quote from the book Alcoholics Anonymous:

bullet

When... we speak to you of God, we mean your own conception of God.  ...Do not let any prejudice you have against spiritual terms deter you from honestly asking yourself what they mean to you.

bullet

We... beg you to lay aside prejudice, even against organized religion.  We have learned that whatever the human frailties of various faiths may be, those faiths have given purpose and direction to millions.  ...We talked of intolerance, while we were intolerant ourselves.
